Minecraft Maps

This page is an archive of Minecraft worlds from 2009 and early 2010. Most of these were originally made by me using my editor. In each case I have provided the original classic map and a converted 1.21 Java Edition world. There are also a couple of others I have converted for 1.21.

Some of these worlds require old versions of Minecraft not included in the official launcher. These can be played using BetaCraft.

Minecraft's Oldest World

May 13th 2009

The oldest Minecraft world was made by ez on May 13th, 2009. I've converted it to be playable in Minecraft 1.21.

I featured a converted version of ez's level in this video. The exact map in the video can be found here, but I recommend the one above as it has the correct biome, terrain blending and none of my in-game edits.

The original world file is here. It can be played using rd-132328. Again, this was made by ez and recovered by the Omniarchive - I did not make this.

Europe Map

17th June 2009

A Classic map from June 2009 using a heightmap of Europe I imported in the earliest version of OME. This was the first released custom map using real-world terrain data. The original download expired so it has been reuploaded. It was made originally on the 14th June 2009 for 0.0.18a_02 but the released version dates to the 17th.

Legend of Zelda Overworld

June 16th 2009

This is the overworld map from the original Legend of Zelda. I made this map by editing the map in photoshop and importing the layers into OME. The original version this map was made on the 16th June 2009 for 0.0.18a_02. I released a cropped version of this map on July 31st 2009.

USS Enterprise

August 16th 2009

This was converted from a 3D model to a voxel format using a tool by Ken Silverman, then imported into Minecraft 0.0.23a_01 with a converter I added to Omen. This is to scale. I did not make the original model and unfortunately it was uncredited.

Battlestar Galactica

August 16th 2009

This was converted from a 3D model to a voxel format using a tool by Ken Silverman, then imported into Minecraft 0.0.23a_01 with a converter I added to Omen. The original model was by Coxxon.

I made two versions - a smaller version that was released in 2009 that included Colonial One and a glass walkway around the edge, and a larger version that Minecraft struggled with.

Imperial Star Destroyer

August 16th 2009

This was converted from a 3D model to a voxel format using a tool by Ken Silverman, then imported into Minecraft 0.0.23a_01 with a converter I added to Omen. I again made a larger version but released a smaller version that ran better in Minecraft and which included a surrounding walkway. I did not make the original model and it was unfortunately uncredited.

Omen Caverns

14th August 2009

This caverns map was made for Classic 0.0.23a_01 with an early version of the caverns generator I added in Omen 0.6.0. Minecraft only had basic plains at this stage so I made generators to add variety. This screenshot I posted to show off the caverns generator ended up being reposted on news sites when Minecraft started to get huge.

Indev Test Level

21st January 2010

This is the oldest NBT Minecraft world. It was generated by Notch on 21st January 2010, the same day he created the NBT (Named Binary Tag) specification and .mclevel format. It was created with a developer version of Minecraft and posted to the page documenting the format (archived here) on the 21st. The next day saw the first Minecraft release to use this format, Indev 0.31 20100122.

I have converted it to 1.21 with some ocean padding around the island. I have also posted my copy of test.mclevel, which shows the date when it was downloaded (2nd Feb 2010) but is the original unmodified file.

Torchlit Caverns

7th February 2010

This 2563 caverns map is from Indev at a time when custom fog and sky colours were supported and lighting had only recently been added. There was no day/night cycle and torches did not need to be attached. This led to some cool atmospheric effects so I made this map and recorded this video.

This can be played using Indev 20100207-2. The floating torches may break in later versions. I have also included an updated version with blue fog - the fog and sky colours can easily be changed with an NBT editor. For the 1.21 version the torches have been replaced with end rods to get a similar effect.
